 The Five-Petaled Rose Festival in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic, may seem like an illusion that Merlin the magician would create. Every June, the 21st-century town undergoes a metamorphosis, transforming it into a 14th-century village. It originated when five sons of the king competed to divide the kingdom into five regions. The festival has kept this vibrant medieval town thriving for 600 years. Beautiful maidens-in-waiting still accompany their heroes into the arena to joust with each other as they display their distinct, colorful hybrid roses on their shields and banners.
