Rembrandt’s Secret Windmills
A thousand years ago, sailors from around the globe sought out the Dutch to trade with. They depended on them for their ingenious windmills to grind stones, wood and spices.
They watched in awe from the ships, as the workers, while wearing wooden shoes, would climb the vast daunting sails that blew capriciously in the wind to harvest energy from the sea to pump water to protect their homeland which is below sea level.
Rembrandt also depended on paint windmills like this one, which is the last of its type to create naturally vibrant colors by grinding minerals from the earth and combining them with oil to make his paintings timeless.
