Countless stories have been written about mystical cities. Movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Lost City of Atlantis have enchanted countless people for centuries. Machu Picchu was discovered by a Harvard historian in 1911. It was completely covered by thick jungle vegetation and the natural cloud forest that surrounds it. It took a team of professional explorers four years to clear the site. To the historians’ amazement, 108 tombs had mummies in them, and 80% of them were females.
Although the Spanish conquistadores pillaged Peru, they never found this sacred place that was only an hour by air to the Amazon Jungle. The old peak, Huayna Picchu oversees the Urbamba River and the Machu Picchu from nine thousand feet above sea level. It has been placed on the list of endangered world heritage sites.
